Fight against corruption in Belarus must be nationwide
2014-08-29    Fight against corruption in Belarus must be nationwide, BelTA learned from Belarusian Interior Minister Igor Shunevich. The official took part in the ceremony to swear in first-year cadets of the Mogilev Higher College of the Interior Ministry on 29 August. The ceremony took place in the memorial complex Buinichi Field.

According to the Interior Minister, a bill on fighting corruption is in development. However, the bill is just one of the instruments used by law enforcement agencies in this fight. The application of the law in practice will be crucial. “In my opinion, fight against corruption must be nationwide. Of course, fighting corruption is our primary job but it seems to me that when the society starts to deeply reject such negative phenomena, the results will be more tangible,” Igor Shunevich was convinced.

In his opinion, every citizen should understand that they encourage and breed corruption by handing over any material values in exchange for the services that civil servants are supposed to provide for free.

The Minister said he believes that this antisocial phenomenon is still rather hard to detect. Apart from the laws that the state adopts Belarusian law enforcement agencies also think about new ways and methods to detect corrupted officials and executives with sticky fingers.

“Everything has to be judged in development, in dynamics, but the standards the police and the entire law enforcement block of Belarus demonstrate in fighting corruption are rather high. Not only our experts but foreign specialists mention that. Therefore, we have no serious concerns regarding claims that corruption threatens the country. Everything is under control,” concluded the Belarusian Interior Minister.
